The Horse Crucified and Risen / Film - The Horse Crucified and Risen (Horse Encyclopaedia) by Alexander Nevzorov

13 Subtitle: War

13.1        A.Nevzorov (off screen): During the centuries of human history a horse has always been an essential attribute of war. For about forty centuries a war has been absolutely impossible without a horse. However, almost everything connected with its participation in wars of all epochs firstly was mythologized, idealized and romanized and later cinematographized. The mankind created a lot of myths – wonderful myths about the boldness of cavalry, about the horse attacks, about the grace and efficiency of a horse at war. In reality the destiny of the cavalry’s battles depended on ‘espines’ (iron prickles), which were sowed on the battle field and which injured any horse trodden on them. The horse armour is also a myth as it is impossible to protect the horse’s legs because they are very fragile.
Napoleon was utmost sincere when speaking about a military horse.

13.2     Napoleon (the translation of A. Nevsorov off screen)
“What? Pardon? A horse? You’ve probably seen a lot of lie on the pictures of Gerico and David. They have nothing to do with the reality. It’s a common knowledge that  the best military horse is the one which can endure sufferings  longer.
A horse is an enemy if it carries an enemy. And the commander’s order in the Great Army is simple: “First of all, horses must be short. They are better target than their riders”.

13.3       A.Nevzorov (off screen): In reality there were almost no brilliant attacks and perfect battles like in cinema. There were a great amount of tortured, lousy and hungry horses dragging themselves along faster or slower. However, sometimes the military horses were honoured with awards.

13.4       A.Nevzorov (off screen): February of 1150. One and a half centuries had passed since Russia accepted Byzantine belief. But old Slavonic gods were still alive in the souls of the Russian princes.
On the 8th of February at night in the battle of Luzk between the people of Isjaslav from Kiev and Jury Dolgoruky the horse of Jury Dolgoruky’s son Andrew named Aliy was killed. That horse rendered many great services and was famous for its courage and fidelity to his master. The Prince loved it so much that once he killed the armour-bearer who had dared to hit the horse. They were so faithful to each other that the Prince wanted to meet Aliy after his death and be together again. The Prince demanded from the Byzantine monks, who were attached to the army, to give communion to a horse but he was ridiculed. And he was told that there was no place in the Reign of God for cattle and horses. However, the Prince ordered to bury the horse like a warrior keeping up the pagan traditions appealing to pagan gods Semarge and Perun to bless his horse. This act was declared as a great sin, but after his death the Prince wanted to be with his horse and he said: “I sin bravely and merrily. If there is no Aliy in the Heaven’s Reign, I have nothing to do there”.
The Prince with his armed not being afraid of a sin carried the horse to the bank of the Stir’ river and erected there a burial mound. They bowed low to the horse and appealed to the pagan gods to take him to the heavens.

13.5       A.Nevzorov (off screen): To get high to heavens and run freely and happily around the large god’s palm was easier for horses than to move from one country to another.
A war on new continents required new horses.
At that time it was very difficult to bring horses alive and healthy from one place to another or from one country to another. It was mostly difficult to transport them by sea, but people had to do it. After the conquest of America a lot of ships moved from Spain to the New World carrying horses to colonists. The exploration of vast lands  was impossible without them. Holds of the ships were packed with horses, which had to spend there 2-3 months.

13.6       A.Nevzorov (on screen): Here is the three-mastered ship which was very typical of the time and they were used to transport horses. Here is a company of seamen-cutthroats which was also very typical of that time.

13.7        A.Nevzorov (off screen): It happened so that if a ship got in a dead  calm it was water that  people ran out of. Half dead and weakly rats climbed up the dining tables. People were becoming mad because of idleness and hard drinking and, as a result, started to cut each other in fights. When there was no water left, a decision to throw  horses overboard was taken. If horses had died of thirst in the holds, seamen would have had to drag 500 kilos of dead flesh out on their backs. Therefore till horses could walk, they were taken out and thrown into the ocean. As a result, the so-called “Horses latitude” appeared on the sea maps in commemoration of thousands of  Spanish horses who died in the middle of the ocean.

13.8       A.Nevzorov (on screen): On the ancient Haute Ecole emblem where De Nester’s words “A horse is always right” are written a choker - a caste sign of the North-American whisperers of the horses - has recently appeared. (speaks Lacothian). It shows how much the Haute Ecole school owes to the caste of the North-American horse whisperer .
