The Horse Crucified and Risen / Film - “The Horse Crucified and Risen” (Horse Encyclopaedia) by Alexander Nevzorov
3 Subtitle : Bit.
3.1 A.Nevzorov (off screen): The purpose of the horse bit has always been the same. It has only one function – that of causing a pain in the horse mouth. By configuration the bit of the 8th century BC didn’t differ from modern bit.
3.2 A. Nevsorov (on screen): The Indian bridle consisted of a thong tied round the lower jaw through which the control was accomplished.
3.3 A.Nevzorov (off screen): There exist several outstanding collections of horse bit. Take the Hermitage collection that is stored in the stock of the Knight Hall, a magnificent collection, take my word for it. It comprises all the samples of the human cunningness and meanness, everything that represents the unwillingness of a man to look for another kind of his relationship with the horse.
There is a good collection of Chantilly in the former stables of the Prince of Conde. There is a collection of Mario Luraschi – small, but arranged with taste. And in all of them one can see curbs, snaffles, pelhams - and everywhere they are the same.
One can observe the bit in action at any horse competition, for it is in sport that the cruelty is absolute. Sport must be talked about anyway because in the world history of the horse it occupies somewhat shameful and tragic, but still quite prominent place.
